6 Easy Plastic Free Swaps For Your Bathroom
Go into your bathroom and have a look at how many plastic items you have in there. Toothbrush? Disposable razor? Shampoo bottle?
It’s a new year and time to review your progress in your sustainability journey. It’s not easy to get rid of all the plastic in your home, but every small step we take goes a long way to reduce the impact on our environment.
That doesn’t mean you have to throw away all the plastic products in your home and go out and buy new alternatives, it simply means that the next time you go to buy an item for your bathroom, you can remember this blog and make the switch.
Ditch those shampoo and conditioner bottles
Shampoos and conditioners generally come in plastic bottles that we throw into the bin without a second thought once they are finished. Replacing these with a shampoo or conditioner bar is a huge step towards reducing waste in your bathroom. The peppermint and lemon shampoo bar from Fair and Square is 100% natural with no silicones and other chemicals – your hair will love it!
Get rid of your Body wash
Shower gel or body wash is another culprit when it comes to plastic waste. We are a big fan of the the basic bar of soap. Stick to brands that come packaged in cardboard or no packaging at all
Don’t buy any more disposable plastic razors
We throw away 2 billion plastic razors each year! Not only do safety razors reduce the amount of plastic waste going into landfill each year, they also add some luxury and simple style to your bathroom. We love the rose gold safety razors from Sustainablah.
Replace your plastic toothbrush
Many of us haven’t given a thought to our plastic toothbrushes, but the average plastic toothbrush takes over 400 years to break down and bamboo toothbrushes are a great sustainable alternative. Over 4.7 billion plastic toothbrushes hit our landfills each year, so don’t contribute to that as there is a better solution. Bamboo toothbrushes help to reduce pollution. Once you are finished using it just pop it into your garden or composter and let it biodegrade. Eco-friendly toothbrushes have to be one of the easiest swaps you can make if you haven’t already done so. We love the Nudi point charcoal-infused bamboo toothbrushes that have extra soft wave form bristles that are teeth and gum friendly.
Swap out those makeup wipes
Did you know that most regular makeup wipes are made from plastic? They are made out of polyester and contribute to the waste in landfill as a result. A simple face cloth with a cleanser can do the trick as quickly and it’s an easy replacement. As an alternative find an ethically sourced hemp and cotton reusable cotton wipe.
Switch your handwash
Plastic bottles of handwash can be okay if they are refillable and you can reuse them. However a simple bar of soap can make a sustainable alternative. If your regular handwash comes in a plastic bottle, switch it out for a regular bar of soap on a bamboo soap dish. If you prefer a liquid or antibacterial option, pick one that comes in recycled glass or aluminium bottles.
